Being blown over the mountain, sucked into cloud, or major canopy instability (especially close to mother earth), are typical pilot fears. We will also take a look at rapid descent maneuvers and, in case all else fails, how to deploy your reserve. Course Rules What you will need - Sandals or strops to wear while flying, and a life jacket (provided by us) - NB: Freezer bags and insulation tape to tape up radio with (we will provide this) - Hat, waterproof suntan lotion, lots of liquid, spare clothing and a towel - Food and essential liquids for the course (Not just beer!) - All your own paragliding equipment, including a radio At the dam- If you have an inflatable air-bag back-protector, disable it! - When waiting for a tow, if second in line please be clipped in and ready to launch, you will be towed if the first pilot aborts. - IMPORTANT: Each pilot will be towed in rotation, if you fail to make use of your tow – So Be It. Please do not waste the other pilots time, and be ready! - Once you have released from the tow, check that the towline has fallen clear. - Once clear of the line, you should immediately start with the Maneuvers, after turning into wind, or as instructed by Hans. - To get the maximum play time out of the flight you should land on the closest bank of the dam (from release point). Towing- Launch control is done by Ria, who is responsible until you’re over the edge of the dam - Paul and Pete take over and will communicate with you as needed. - IMPORTANT: Stay on the line, this means looking at your glider and the line in turn to make sure you are following it perfectly and not going off line. - This is normally simple, unless towing cross wind when you have to be extra aware. - Remember, there is more tension on your brake toggles when you are being towed. - Don’t worry, we’ll be talking you through it. - IMPORTANT: When you come to the end of the tow you can release by simply pulling the handle on the winch release. When to do this is communicated via radio, but be sure NOT to release before the tension slacks off on the line. Paul and Pete are reasonable guys but releasing under tension is one of the things that gets them going. It means that the line shoots back and ends up in a crows nest on top of them in the boat. This takes long to untangle and wastes everybody’s time! Maneuvers
All maneuvers will be fully and clearly explained before practice. The reason, method of entry, stabilization, lead out and dangers will all be covered. If you have any questions, you must ask before, not after the flight. Some maneuvers will first be done in gentle manners and then more severe. All maneuvers required by SAHPA for the sports license are to be practiced at least three times. We hope that you enjoy the course, learn more about your glider and glider behavior in general and have a confidence boost. NOTE from Ria: Please acknowledge your intention of attending. I will need a deposit as soon as I have six confirmations. NB: Remember that the manoeuvres will be done according to your experience. There is no need to do a full stall, for example, as it is not part of the Sports license curriculum. It is only on the list as an extra for pilots with more experience that would like to do it. The same applies for a negative spin. Course price: R3000 You need a radio of your own with a headset. A cheap headset obtainable at any music shop will do. They cost about R30. VENUE: Midmar dam, Morgenzon campsite C. Accommodation: We normally camp next to where we do most of our launching. There is a tuckshop right there where you can purchase refreshments. Camping costs R50pp. I normally phone ahead to find out if we need to book. If you would like a chalet, prices are from R140pp for basic to R180pp for the nicer ones. Let me know and I can send the contact details to book this. Information needed from course attendees: Full names, SAHPA license no, type of license i.e Sports or Basic, no of flights. Operation is pretty slick. Tows generally 500m over water. A rescue boat is on standby as you do your manouevres and Hans gives very clear instructions. The whole course is a lot of fun. |
