Overberg Cross Country Log Greg 'Hammer' Hamerton has made some changes to the Overberg Paragliding Clubs XC Log. I have listed the new rules ubelow in Greg's words. To take part in this Paragliding Cross Country Challenge, you need to become a member of the Overberg Paragliding Club and your flights ANY WHERE in the South Africa AND the World will count. The Overberg and Fly De Aar are the only South African organisations promoting and keeping track of cross country flights in South Africa. The Overberg posts updates monthly on their www.overbergparaglidingclub.co.za whilst De Aar posts only De Aar site records on their www.flydeaar.co.za website. So Dessie of De Aar.......... How about the SA Ladies record holder becoming a member of the Overberg Paragliding Club? I need some female competition. Sure being the only lady playing with the Cape's Big Boys is fun...And yeah, whipping all but one butt is fun....BUT... I would love to see other women in the game...and better still, more women up on the 'Podium'. Come on Dessie....... Let us show the Overberg boys, that marathon flying is a girls game and let's go for 1st and 2nd this year...... I can hear their excuses already...:-) We have heard them all before.......:-))))
Here is the Overberg Paragliding Clubs bank account details to become a member: Pay R150 joining fees and fax your proof of payment to the Treasurer - Danjo Grove at grvdan001(at)uct.ac.za. He will send you an email acknowledging your contribution.
Then submit your kilometers flown anywhere in the World weekly, to: greg(at))eternitypress.co.za If you re not flying with a GPS, you are only allowed one Turnpoint to estimate your distance. If you are using the On Line Contest system, then your tracklog is varified using 5 turnpoints and the distance (km) if scored on leonardo/olc/online contests is what is used. This will always give you a higher score than the non techno route, so it is in your best interest, if you are serious about your ranking, to register on Leonardo , the XCCOMP or OLC etc. Otherwise, just have fun, but I must share with you - even blondes can do it :-) Nedbank : Overberg Paragliding Club Account no: 1207001716 Branch no: 120710 Reference: YOUR NAME, SUBSCRIPTION From Hammer - the Overberg XC Log Administrator: I have shifted the OVB XC ladder season end date to 30 April. That way the new season begins 1 May, you can spend all winter filling up your ladder with little xc's, and through summer they all get replaced by blasting big xc flights.
Overberg XC ladder is for Overberg members - it is an attempt to get some xc spirit going by having a very simple no techno friendly ranking within the club. It's a club development thing, it's one of the many ways we keep our edge and beat the Glen and Wilderness clubs at Gatskops ;-). To keep it relevant I limited it to SA flights only so there was a sense of fair comparison. There have been calls to make it even more limited and keep it W.Cape only flights, since as soon as someone goes to De Aar they destroy any comparison value with a difficult xc at Sir Lowry's Pass. I say I don't care where you do your xc, I'll take my xc anywhere, and the pilot knows when he's busted out a great 50km xc at Sir Lowry's Pass and isn't going to be deterred by someone else flying 75km downwind at de aar. So after a year of restrictive rules, I support 2beers and Dennis and Bernie and Flygirl in Europe - I think it will be healthier for our club to acknowledge any xc flown anywhere by paid up members who continue to support the club. Well done you guys!
So the OVERBERG XC LADDER season has closed, 30 April 2007. The new season has started 1 May 2007. Please send me your flights (distance, date, location) to greg(at)eternitypress.co.za. A national xc ladder has been available to anyone since way back on OLC, but OLC is frustrating. After the OLC fiasco last year (new system OLC2.0 a confusing mess, fragmented groups of pilots starting new platforms) I shifted to Leonardo (go to www.paraglidingforum.com and click link on left).
Leonardo has nice features, based on Calendar year (simplest). If you go to Pilots, set Country=South Africa and Year=2007, you get the 2007 National SA XC ladder, which means 'flights in south africa' not 'south african pilots'. I think that's a good choice - I don't care what your passport says, if you fly xc in sa then you're competing with me. Unfortunately Des Pansi is placed #2 and I'm #3, so there must be some programming error ... ;-)))
There's also no limit on when you can submit your track (great idea!) so if you want to be part of the party - join us, upload all your tracks, let's get a SA XC ladder going. I propose we (South African pilots) host our National XC league on Leonardo. In fact, we're already doing it, most pilots just don't know. |
