Good weather for flying airtime wise on this, the first day of the XC Comp. Tonight we will know if anyone made good distance. Out of the Misfits Retrieve Team it looks like the Ladies did the best with Russian Adelaide flying SW to the Pass - about 34kms. Flygirl covered about 21.7kms......and it took me 2 hours to do it!!! Towards the end I made the mistake of becoming impatient at flying 10km/ph and pushed speedbar to just past El Barco town. The men in our team all fell out along the way, generally about 10km minimum distance. So for our team, not a great distance day, but will report back how the likes of Godfrey Wenness, Hans Bausenwein and X-Alps Martin Muller did and of course the rest of the South Africans in the comp. Des and I were in the first gaggle and I later joined Tracey on her Gin Zoom as the leaders and Des left us behind, so I know that both my country women got away. I flew the flats, most flew the low mountain range, whilst the very brave went into the back mountains.
Unofficial updates below: Des Pansi and Gary Whitecross flew about 21km and landed together with Godfrey Wenness. So pretty much the same as Flygirl, which is a relief :-) Yeah, wicked I know :-)))) Matthew Church from the Uk also landed near me. Jan Minnaar and Tracey King landed around 13k. Tracey looked a lot more comfortable on her glider today for which I am glad. Khobi did not fly - she was on retrieve duty for her team. Although my airtime never translated into real distance, I did have a fantastic flight from the point of view I felt totally at ease with the air and my surroundings. Enough to fly frequently without my hands on either breaks whilst I took photo's in the gaggle thermals. Sure I was not going to allow myself to drift back into the big mountains and valleys like many others did, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself and feel excited about flying tomorrow.
