Overberg Paragliding Club XC Log
Overberg Paragliding Club XC Log

Ewa Wisnierska - Swing Team
Ewa Wisnierska - Swing Team

Hammer is soooooo the closet competitive.  All quiet and sneaky, going after those big flights when no-one is looking.

This must really have irked him: -

'Flygirl is leading the overall Overberg Paragliding Club XC Log with 427 kms and Greg is second with 264kms'

Way too far behind in the XC stakes for his liking :-)))))))

And what have I found out.....?

He has joined one of the two Swing Teams where Ewa Wisnierska of high altitude record fame (10 000m without oxygen in Manilla, Australia) is his wing woman!

I mean I ask you ..... is he competitive or what?  Bringing out the big guns like this...

And it is a private party - Flygirl and her Aerodyne Shaolin can't join in. Sulk!

Now if I was on a Gradient Intermediate Golden 2 .......nah, might make Hammer's Swing Astral 5 look bad :-)

Keeping ahead of Hammer is obviously a motive, but I would have loved the opportunity to test my lesser XC skills alongside Ewa's though, in my own country.  Ewa is the Number Two Lady Paragliding pilot in the whole WORLD and ranked number 72 alongside the men - and she will be here in South Africa attempting to break records!!!

Can you imagine what I would learn...?  Humility  for sure :-) but it would lift my game to another level.

Flygirl (obviously recovering her bounce from her recent 'defeat' by the De Aar air...)

For those who do not know the story - this is what made Ewa world famous  - NEWS

More about these record breaking attempts on It is hunting season in De Aar...

From Greg (Hammer)  Hamerton - All the latest action, to get you fired up for the weekend.

Ian and myself (Greg) had a superb Apostolic flight yesterday - quite by surprise, but flew from Karbonkelberg to Green Point, along the wispy clouds. 23km for me!

Then Flygirl and Spammer (SOLboy) and Moose and Jaco are flying the Overberg flag up in De Aar, clocking up those big deserted xc-s. Well done Earl for 114km! Welcome to the 100 club. (and he just clocked another 100km flight, says Flygirl)

Flygirl is leading the overall Overberg Paragliding Club XC Log with 427 kms and Greg is second with 264kms.

Hammer is leading the Western Cape Flights Only log with 285kms and Flygirl is second on that log with 215kms.

THE OCTOBER OPC XC LOG updates

Some changes in position, most noticeably:

The Voidhawk slowly disappearing into the void ...  and I am not talking altitude....he has been unusually quiet of late.

Dr Freeze is now in 3rd position. ..and that is with 3 flights of 4kms logged!  But then there are also those big numbers.... Those of you who are shy to give your mileage to Hammer cause it is only a few km's .. don't be.  Every km counts and the good Dr knows it.  Nice one Ian :-)

Tickbird has climbed to 5th position.  I think this weekend he is really going to shake things up with Hammer away.

Steph Juncker is entering the log for the first time this season and already making his presence felt - now why am I not surprised about that :-)  Straight to 6th position.

Richard, my weekday flying buddy is new to this seasons log...and I see he has failed to register his Thursday flight to Bumpy with me - about 18kms.  Rich, you need to email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with your kms.

Tommie Le Roux is also a new face on the log.

And now for the Top 10 pilots counting Western Cape flights only:

1 - Hammer
2 - tied 2nd place Dr Freeze and Flygirl
4 - Voidhawk
5 - Tickbird
6 -  Steph the Clown
7 - The Red Baron
8 - Birdman
9 - The Marshal Eagle
10-Snork Snr

You may notice something here.....the Top 10 all have nicknames.  Go get a nickname - it helps you fly distance :-)

30 SEPTEMBER2007

From Greg Hamerton, Keeper of the Overberg XC Log :

Here's something to get your vario squealing about .. there's a girl out front on the XC ladder!
Get some xc trackpoints into your gps this weekend, or even during the week - anything goes, the gloves are off (or in the case of Mr Marshall, the trousers). brr.

I've even got a column for Tickbird - I'll be tracking W.Cape distance for information purposes.
The important total is still "worldwide distance", but I may have to change the rules if I'm doing badly by the end of the season ;-)))

Flygirl Chirp:
Dear Keeper of the Overberg XC Log
I have no intention of neglecting my local mileage.  Let's see if Flygirl can be reasonably competitive with these pesky mountains cluttering up the Koringberg Flatlands.  This is a new challenge, one which I hope to rise above and beyond.....

The results as they stand for Septmeber 2007:

20 Sep 2007

Here are the latest standings on our club xc ladder. Great to see some new entrants - welcome Gene Lohrentz, straight into 6th position. There's a whole gaggle looking dangerous for third place - one flight and Tickbird is history, never mind Dr Second Freeze (that's either because he'll freeze in a second should he try paragliding in his new job, or possibly because the Real Dr Freeze came first). (The Real Dr Freeze has yet to feature on the xc ladder)(OHhh, there he is, down in 16th place .. we wonder if he can still fly ;-)

Tracy and Tickbird put in a superb out-and-return flight to Bumpy peak last weekend, Ross Hofmeyr recently ran the gauntlet to Jonkershoek from Sir Lowry's, Barry and Ioel even logged a flight on their tandems!

And for the first time, we have 20 contestants on the ladder. The season is rolling, so grab your own rung on the ladder Overberg members (you're welcome to join us if you aren't yet an Overberger) and please send your xc flight km to greg(at)eternitypress.co.za.

Some people collect stamps. I collect km. Maybe one day I'll have enough to ... I dunno ... get a freeflight?

This weekend coming will be the one to tackle the site record at Koringberg, or just to break your personal bests over some green
flatlands and help cheer Tickbird up on the walkouts.
And then there's the problematic girl who just cries out 'beat me,beat me', somewhere way up there in the Spanish convergence line. Well flown flygirl (probably the only international comp task winner in our club). You're going to have to run faster than that.

And the race is on.
