Previous OFFICIAL STRAIGHT DISTANCE RECORD Straight distance : 423.4 km Date of flight: 21/06/2002 Pilot: William GADD (Canada) Course/place: Zapata, TX (USA) - South of Ozona, TX (USA) Paraglider: Gin Gliders Boomerang Superfly | The Valic brothers set an unofficial world record of 426kms in 2006 from Vosburg, South Africa, but unfortunately, FAI were still using ancient guidelines to ratify the claims which did not take into account GPS technolgy. This came to light in the most unfortunate way when the brothers flew futher than the previous record, but then flew back on their course to find a safer landing spot. The ruling was that FAI measured you from your take off point to your landing point. This, in my opinion, is an extremely dangerous ruling as it may force pilots to take risks and land in bad territory. GPS technology is now used in all competitions to check pilots flight claims and FAI should get with the latest technology. FAI has updated the rules for paragliding competitions etc - Sporting Code 7 I have still to go though it to see if the Measurement for Open Distance Records has changed to GPS tracklog info and nolonger Landing. |
