Refer to this SAD update: http://flygirl.co.za/content/view/174/120/South Africa - Home of Paragliding World Records (but not the 426km as stated below)Desiree and Arnold Pansi of FlyDeAar hosted the latest world record breaking flights by brothers Urban and Aljaz Valic who flew their Mac gliders 425/6 km to break Will Gadd´s open distance record (unofficially, because of a technicality) The Slovenians took off from Vosburg, 100 north of De Aar, on winch and flew for over 7 hours to land 300m apart after flying past their declared goal of 368km and on to 425/6km. The problem was that they flew back and landed and that is what they are scored on,not the distance in the air proven by their GPS's. Tandem pilot Richard Westgate and passenger Phil Bibby flew their tandem 356 km to set a new tandem world record. The previous record was 299km. Urban & Aljaz Valec Dec 2006 MAGUS 5 368km - * NEW DECLARED GOAL & Richard Westgate (UK) 2006 GRADIENT Bi-Golden 356km - * NEW TANDEM WORLD RECORD* 2005 GRADIENT Bi-Golden 223km - 1st Tandem site record Simon Headford (UK) 2006 AIRWAVE Mustang 338km - British Open Distance record Martin Bacsack (SA/AUS) 2005 GIN; Boomerang 3 344km - Previous SA Record John Broderick (SA) 2005 GRADIENT; Aspen 334km - a new SA Pilot record, which was broken minutes later by Martin Bacsack Karl Bauer (GER) 2005 ADVANCE, Omega 6 222km - German Distance record Alfredo Studer (CH) 2005 SWING, Mistral 4 306km - a new World Record on a DHV1-2 glider 32 x 200 plus km flights & 13 x 300 plus km flights flown on Paragliders. NOTE that FlyDeAar don't even bother listing 100 plus km flights as this is considered easy pickings. Anything under 50km is not noteworthy at all as it is an 'everyday occurance' in season!!! Hang gliders have flown between between 200km & 450km. For more on De Aar flying: www.pottiesbnb.co.za/ www.flydeaar.co.za |
