Home is wherever I am. The baby of the South African Ladies Competition team in terms of flying experience, I had a great start to my debut competition year, 2007, winning a task overall in Spain, securing the title 'Best Lady of the XC Open World Series 2007'. Long distance flying is my passion. In January 2009 I gave up my day job to hitch-hike and paraglide around Australia for 9 months. It has become my way of life. Home is De Aar in the Northern Cape. Paragliding for 13 years, Des is a paragliding Instructor in De Aar and together with her husband Arnold, she works hard towards bringing the World Records back to South Africa. In 2007, Des made a come back to competition flying. That same year she finished 3rd Lady in the XC Open World Series in Peidrahita, Spain. On the National scene she became the 2007 and 2008 SAPC Ladies Champion. In November 2008, Fly De Aar hosted the Pre-XC-Open World Series - putting the worlds attention once more on South Africa. During this competition, Des set a new SA Ladies Open Distance Record of 203 km. Des is currently ranked 13th Overall on the SA Ranking (WPRS) & 24th Lady in FAI World ranking. Home is the Wilderness Western (Southern) Cape. Paragliding since 2000, Khobi became an Instructor with CLOUDBASE PARAGLIDING in 2005 and received her Tandem rating in 2007. Khobi's first competition in South Africa was in 2004 where she won Novice Class and in 2006 when she won Ladies Class. In 2006 Khobi entered her first International comp in Ager, Spain and has become a regular international and local competition pilot.
Recent achievements include:
Thabazimbi 2009 - 8th overall, 1st lady
Barberton 2009 - 1st lady, Ladies National Champion.

Home is Gauteng. Paragliding for 15 years, Tracey only entered the competition paragliding arena in 2004. In 2006 Tracey won the Ladies South African Title. Awarded Protea colours, she joined the South African Protea team consisting of four men and one woman and competed in the Worlds Paragliding Competition in Manilla, Australia in February 2007.

Home is Gauteng. Flying since 1997, Maryna entered her first competition in 2001. From 2003-2006 she was the SA Ladies Champion. Maryna's best competition achieving year was 2003 when she was the 7th ranked Lady internationally. In 2006 she was ranked 13th Lady. Maryna lost her South African title after an accident in Oct 2006, made a full recovery, only to have a second accident in 2008 on return to competition flying. The upside is she is now happily married to Kevin Story and they recently had their first child.

Home is Gauteng. The most successful female competition pilot to come out of South Africa. Flying since 1991, Andrea was SA 1st Lady from 1997 -2001 winning the Title 6 times in a row. In Zimbabwe in 1998 she finished 1st Overall - beating the men. Further afield, competing internationally, Andrea attained the highest ranking an SA women has ever achieved - 2nd Lady in the World in 2001. After years of struggling to sponsor her competition flying, Andrea has now retired to fun flying. She married Greg Watkins and they have a child together.

60kms FAI TRIANGLE. Today I flew my first ever Triangle and it was a 'goodie'. Had I known that the Ladies WORLD Record for an FAI Triangle was just 30 more kms I would have tried harder!

Broome was like a big city for us where we could go to good restaurants, do some internet, telephone calls, banking, recharge our cellphones and shop for provisions. It was a good break from camping, but we are looking forward to relaxing in Barn Hill.... Both of us feel a little exhausted

When Niel Calitz was reported missing in the Wood Cape area between Port Elizabeth and Cannon Rocks, hundreds of people mobilised in many different and important ways, to help with the Search and Rescue efforts. He was found deceased-13 days later, covered over in sand, in the original search area of Perdevlei where sand dunes are over 100m high and cover an area 2-3 km's wide from sea to bush line. These are some of the images of a handful of people involved...and of a very beautiful place to be in one's final hours.......

1 tandem, 7 Accelerated Free Falls and one static line jump..... I was never comfortable in FreeFall..until the moment the 'Chute opened - a born paraglider pilot even back in the early 1990's. I just did not know it then.

Shell 10 June 2008. Up at 03h45 to pick up boat and be at Stellenbosch Aerodrome at 06h00 in howling wind and darkness. Miserable weather. Did not get the shot. Later midday we battled with take after take to get another shot in Rawsonville. Had lunch then off to Shell Forecourt in Worcester where we battled against losing light. Home at 20h00. Re-shoot Saturday 14 - images added.

Always lovely working with professionals. I was subcontracted by Frog Squad to supply three period boats for the UK mini series Devils Whore. The boating scenes were shot in Haweston and Hermanus Old Harbour. Hermanus is popular tourist and paraglider destination. Fly whilst you watch the whales breach :-) See June Blog.

Through Gaynor Sports Talent, James Braid was cast as the paraglider pilot for an Engen advertising campaign based on various sporting scenarios. Shooting took place over three days at dawn & sunset, to capture a certain mood light. Not ideal conditions for paragliding, but James was the right man with a high level of skill and a calm presence to get the job done safely and to Engen's satisfaction.

In August 1994, I made a decision which changed the course of my life. I hitched on a Russion Illusion aircraft into Uganda and then into Goma, Zaire with the US Airforce on a C130. I became a volunteer aid-worker to the Rwandan Refugees.

Flygirl, The Addict and Dr Freeze want to learn Acro...so we went to Koppies Dam and learned how to SAT, do the Rythmic/Asymetric Spiral and experience Acro with Walter Neser on Tandem. What a fantastic experience! Sadly we predict that the SAT will become as common as spiralling once you all realise there is nothing to it.

Pierre Carter climbed Mt Elbrus in Russia in 2005 as part of his Seven Summit Challenge. It took his party 6 days. He then flew off it with a paraglider. Thank you to James for supplying the images.
